Laser Eye Procedures Q & A

What is a laser eye procedure?

Many different types of Laser procedures exist today. Lasers are used in glaucoma, cataract surgery, retinal disorders,  facial rejuvenation, eyelid surgery, lesion removals, refractive surgery, hair removal and tattoo removal.  These are the laser procedures we perform in the office:

SELECTIVE LASER TRABECULECTOMY (SLT)

The SLT is used to help lower intraocular eye pressure in patients that have glaucoma. This safe and painless laser treatment is performed in our office. Patients whose pressures cannot be controlled by eye drops alone are usually recommended to have the SLT in order to preserve visual acuity. The SLT also helps patients reduce the need to use numerous eye drops to treat their eye condition.

YAG LASER CAPSALOTOMY

Occasionally, vision after cataract surgery may once again become cloudy. This cloudiness is caused by the opacification of the lens capsule (the clear structure that holds the intraocular lens in its place). Patients that are having trouble with reading, driving or other activities may be recommended to have the YAG Laser. The YAG Laser is a safe in-office procedure that is used to open a cloudy lens capsule. It will help restore any vision that may have been lost due the cloudiness of the lens capsule and is painless.

Facial Rejuvenation

This fractional technology uses microbeams or columns of energy to create areas of affected tissue that extend through the skin’s epidermis into the dermis while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed resulting in faster healing. This triggers the body’s natural healing process to clear away old, damaged skin cells and create new, healthy cells to take the place of the cells that have been cleared away. The laser also stimulates the production of new collagen & elastin deep within your skin. Over time, this will build up the support structure under your skin resulting in a younger and smoother looking appearance.

Surgitron

Surgitron uses advanced radio-wave technology that provides unparalleled surgical control, precision, versatility, and safety. A surgical electrode emits radio-waves glides through tissue with no pressure. The cutting effect is performed without crushing cells. Heat is generated by resistance offered by tissue to the passage of a radio frequency wave which disintegrates and volatizes the cells in its path. It causes the tissue to split apart as if it had been cut with a sharp razor-blade.

Hair Removal

During [laser/light-based] hair removal, the device emits light energy that travels through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft. Pigments are the substances that give skin and hair its color. This energy damages the hair follicle, which impairs its ability to grow. Hair follicles that are in the anagen, or active growth phase, have more pigment and absorb more energy, and typically respond best to treatments. For this reason, it takes multiple treatments to achieve the best results – it’s important to “catch” your hair in this active growth phase when you are receiving treatments.

Tattoo Removal

We all have past experiences that we would like to erase, and for millions of Americans, this includes body ink.  Research shows that the number  of US adults who have a tattoo has increased to  45 million, or one in five (21%). This includes over half (60%) of all women over the age of 18².

With the rise in tattoos, tattoo regret has also been prevalent.  In fact, research has shown that 20% of individuals with body ink have tattoo regret.  The amount of tattoo removal procedures models this trend, demonstrating an increase in 2011 of 32%, and an even higher percentage, 43%, in 2012.  It is apparent from these statistics, and the increasing number of tattoos, that the tattoo removal market is growing at a significant rate.

What are the advantages of laser eye surgery?

Laser eye surgery offers many advantages. For most patients, this procedure effectively accomplishes the task assigned with little or no pain and often does not require stitches. Friedberg Eye Associates utilizes the best technology for each of these procedures that we offer. Many procedures are covered by insurance, however some are outside the scope of health insurance. Friedberg Eye Associates enables patients to obtain these procedures without difficulty.

Because laser eye energy is a complex, intricate procedure, it's important for patients to choose a surgeon who has the necessary skill and experience. The doctors at Friedberg Eye Associates have been performing these procedure for over 30 years, and offer patients a safe, comfortable, and effective procedures.
